Text length problem for buttons in the Link Bar

Guest

I am creating a new "web" in FrontPage XP (2002). I'm using the Glacier
Theme. On the right side of the index page, I've setup the buttons for the
Link Bar. The problem I have is that the text on a couple of the buttons in
the Link Bar are cut off because the text is too long. Is there a way to
expand that part of the pane or frame or whatever that section is called?
I've tried, but I can't figure it out.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Hi, Torrey~

The only way around this is to change the width of the theme buttons by
modifying the theme, allowing more room for additional text. The more
practical solution is to simply shorten the link name - for example, instead
of "About the Company", simply use "About".

If you really need more room, either select a different theme, use NO theme
for navigation (text links - just scroll down on the Style sheet), or revise
the existing theme.

Teri,

How do I modify the width of the theme buttons in the theme I'm using
(Glacier theme)?

I don't want to change the theme to a different theme and I would prefer to
keep the text lenght that I have for the buttons.

It's rather complex. You'll have to have a graphics program and some
reasonably decent skills with using it. Then you'll need to open the theme
for modification within FrontPage to determine the original button names
(there will be three - normal, active, and hover). Depending on your version
of FrontPage, it will be something like "Format>Theme>Modify>Graphics - then
look at horizontal or vertical nav - depending on what you are changing.

When you get the button names, you'll need to open your graphics program and
individually open each button graphic from the _themes/ folder of your web.
Graphically alter the buttons to make them wider, then save each (my choice
is always using the original name, but not necessary) into the images/
directory of your web.

Afterward, return to the Format>Theme>Modify>Graphics and go back to the
navigation you were changing - select browse for each to browse to the images
directory, then select your revised graphics to replace the originals. Be
sure, of course, to save the theme.

Note that all theme elements EXCEPT the background image must be saved in
..gif format.

Note: You must save the theme under a new name, then remove your current theme and apply your new
modified theme.

Actually, you do NOT have to save the theme with a new name. That method is
recommended if you wish to ever use the original theme in its original state.

You have to save the theme under a new since themes are read-only or you will loose any changes.

hmmmmm - been changing themes for years in FP2000, 2002 and 2003, just tested
again to make sure I wasn't going senile, and was able to do it with a simple
save without a "save as". I wonder if the difference is starting from a
Microsoft theme which comes pre-packaged with the program. I generally have
developed my own themes, then can easily make changes to them without a name
change.

Is that it? Microsoft somehow has written the program so that any theme can
be modified and saved EXCEPT those that are pre-packaged in their program?

Yes, all Microsoft provided themes are stored in compressed read-only .elm file format, must be
applied to a web before they can be modified.

You can make change without saving the theme under a new name, etc., however it will be overwritten
at some point.
