Text is automatically formating

When I change the format of selected text (like centering a heading) it
changes the format of the entire document (centers all text in document).
How do I turn this off?? It is very annoying!

If you have Word 2003 or earlier, open your document and turn off
"automatically update" in the style definitions as described in
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/WholeDocumentReformatted.htm .

If you have Word 2007, click on Office Button | Word Options | Popular |
check the "Show Developer tab in the Ribbon" box | OK. Then open your
document and click on Developer tab | Document Template | Templates tab
| uncheck the "Automatically update document styles" box | OK.
