Text indent + font style in Template

How do you format a Powerpoint Template so that when you hit the tab key
to indent text it changes the font style as set for "Second Level",
"Third Level", etc.? Do I need to apply bullets for the formatting to
take effect?

Are you typing in placeholders (that is, where it says "Click to add text")?

Assuming so, you can set the bullets and text for the other levels by going
to View/Master/Slide Master and formatting the text levels in the text
placeholder.

Hi Echo,

In the placeholders I select & type over where its says "Click to edit
Master text styles" , "Second level" etc and set the different styles
there. But when I use the Template, only the top level style is applied
to the entire text in that placeholder - regardless if I hit tab key.

Ken,
This is most bizarre. You are right, if there are no bullets on the master
slide, you can't use the tab key to indent to the next level. However, the
increase indent button works (it looks like a bunch of lines with a right
arrow to their left).
