text formatting problem

Word 2003 (11.6568.6568) SP3:

While editing a manuscript, written using a custom template, the Word is not
allowing me to apply and modify certain styles.

E.g., when cutting a part of an existing formatted text (body text: Times
New Roman, 12 pt, left) and pasting to a different location, the font size
was automatically changed to 10 pt and style from “body text†to “normalâ€.
Editing the font size in “normal†style corrected the font size, however, the
paragraph is “justified†despite that the style description is set to “leftâ€.
Moreover, the pasted text is treated as if it was an original, so my changes
to it are marked with track changes tool. This behaviour migrated to the
whole paragraph, including my own text already typed a moment earlier.

Can anybody tell me PLEASE how to disable this “helpful†Word behaviour? It
drives me nuts! Or, what info should I provide here such that a guru could
help me to tame the thing?

Thank you Suzanne, but it was not it. The Word has just crushed and upon
recovery, it started behaving normal again.

By the way, with the track changes on, if you place a cursor on, say, the
added text, a balloon pops up showing me the added text, just smaller on top
of what I have just typed and see behind the balloon. It is a normal
behaviour, but it always disrupts my thinking. Is there a way of disabling
the balloon? It is great to see who made a change and so on, but it would be
even greater to be able to turn it on or off as needed. If switching is
difficult, I would rather have it killed.

It sounds as if you have Track Changes enabled and don't want it to be. Turn
it off and accept all the changes.

Suzanne,
I want to use track changes. It is only the balloon that I would like get
rid off.

What you are referring to seems to be the ScreenTip rather than the balloon.
These would be visible only in Normal view, not in Print Layout? In any
case, you can disable them on the View tab of Tools | Options.
