Text fields changed to date fields

I have a file with text fields that have been converted to date fields. These
are numbers, some of which now have hyphens in them. Is there anyway to
restore this back to the original text fields.
 
This is a currently existing file that has been corrupted. Now that numbers
have been turned into dates if I try and change the format back to text I
will get the date code instead of the norma text. An example being the number
5-18-74 has now been turned into a date, when formated to text I get 27167
when I would like to turn it back to 5-18-74. I am guessing this is
impossible at this point, but thought the board would be worth a shot.

if the first number in all the cells is 5 then edit-replace <5> by<'5> and
click <replace all>
