text border

when i try to place a left-hand border for a portion of a paragraph by
selecting text and then selecting the left border only, the result is that
the text gets underlined instead. does anyone have any experience with this
and no how to remedy?

Individual borders can be applied only to paragraphs, not to selected text.
Regardless of the deceptive appearance of the Borders and Shading dialog,
borders applied to selected text will always be a box. Worse still, if you
select more than one line of text, each line will be a separate box.
