Adding only a left side border

Bob

I am trying to add a left border to a couple of text within a paragraph. But
every single time I select the text and go to select the left border, Word
will automatically but a border all around the text for me. If I try to
deselect those other border it will deselect everything including the left
border. It works fine if I'm working with paragraph, but not selected text
within a paragraph. Is there a way to add only a left border to selected text?

Unfortunately, that's the way borders have always worked on any piece of text
less than an entire paragraph. The dialog is misleading.

The only way I can think of that works is to use a line from the Drawing tools.

Thanks for your suggestion, but doesn't the draw function interfere with the
text formatting? I was also thinking of using some kind of drawing tool to
draw a line, if word had such a tool. Anyways, it seems separating the text
into artificial paragraph, placing the border, and reintegrating them work.
Nevertheless, it's a cumbersome process and idiotic. People at microsoft,
please do something about this simple matter.
