Text border as box only?

I want to create a signatre line about my name. I am using the border
feature, and clicking only on the top line, not the whole box, but the whole
box is what appears. I've tried this with the border icon on the toolbar, as
well as going under format and pulling up 'borders and shading.' either way,
it's doing the same thing. help!

Make sure that "Apply to" is set to Paragraph rather than Text. A border for
text (when applied through the Borders dialog) is always a box.
