How do I turn off borders?

L

Whenever I use columns, microsoft automatically frames them in boxes. Also,
microsoft puts borders around the outside of all my documents. I tried
getting rid of the boxes and borders by going to "borders and shadings" in
the formatting drop down menu and clicking on "none". But nothing happens.
How do I get rid of the borders and boxes? Can anyone help?

Are you perhaps displaying "text boundaries"? Tools | Options | View in Word
2003 and earlier; Office Button | Word Options | Advanced: Show document
content in Word 2007 and above.
