Text Animation Suggestion

I was trying out animation for text and discovered that if I use the Page
Layout for the text, on the animation properties dialog box I get an extra
tab called Text Animation with some additional features. However, if I just
insert a text box on the slide, this tab isn't there. In my case, I was
trying to duplicate someone's animation, and I couldn't figure out why I
wasn't getting the additional tab. To add to the confusion, I looked it up
in the online help. It does NOT refer to needing a page layout to getting
this extra Text Animation tab. It simply starts talking about the tab, so a
user trying to figure out how to do something is going to be terribly
confused if they don't see it.

It seems to me that if it's text, it should get the same dialog boxes across
the board whether it's part of a page layout or a text box. If not, then the
help should be at least update to indicate that the user will only see this
extra tab if they are using animation in conjuction with a page layout and
will not see it for just a text box.

Which version of PPT are you using? In PPT 2003, I get a "text animation"
tab in the Effect Options no matter if it's a placeholder (what you get when
you use a slide layout), a manual textbox, or a regular autoshape (like an
oval or rectangle) with text typed in.

PowerPoint 2003, SP1. It must be gremlins--I just tried it again, and this
time it worked, but yesterday, it wasn't there. It only turned up after I
deleted the text box and went to a page layout. Maybe it's a bug, and I just
happened to run across the right combination of events to trigger it. The
problem is I'm not entirely sure what I did differently from any other time.
I'm going to be playing with animation some more, so I'll have to see if it
turns again and what I exactly I did when it happened.

I discovered what I did differently.

Try inserting a text box, typing in some text. Then highlight the text
(instead of selecting the text box) and do the animation. The third tab
disappears when you do this.

Evidently, I kept trying to do the animation by highlighting the text
instead of selecting the box, but when I went to page layout I selected the
text box.
