text alignment in column

How do you center text in a column box without the text centered top or
bottom, but right in the center?

Do you mean a Table Cell? In Word2007, on the Table Layout tab there's
an array of 9 little boxes for the possible placements. Click the one
right in the middle.

Or, and for earlier versions, make the paragraph style Centered (with
the centered icon on the toolbar, for instance) and go to Tables >
Properties > Cell, and you can set vertical alignment for whichever
cells are selected at the moment..
