Test Page Failed to Print

I think something is broken with XP's printing subsystem. But I can't seem
to figure out how to trace the problem. Help! I 've already tried several
suggestions from the Knowledge Base.

I've had some communication problems with an HP PhotoSmart All-in-One C6180.
All PCs on my home network can print, except for my main PC where all my home
office functions happen and my media (photos) are stored. So, I know there's
nothing wrong with the printer hardware.

Problems started when after an update from HP was installed. Printing worked
from the main PC, but I realized nothing else did (scan, fax, etc). Months
of calls to HP tech support and all they could offer was uninstall/reinstall
of the software. Soon, they started having me perform more agressive
uninstalls. Some of those included 'harmless' automated removal of some
registry items. After several months, all functions are now working except
for printing. HP can't figure it out and they finally gave up saying its a
Microsoft problem. I agree that its a Windows issue now, as all the HP
printing software and hardware diagnostics check out. (But I blame the issue
on the HP support).

So here's the symptom: As I said above, all systems check out. I don't
believe the HP Diagnostic software is checking the Windows XP part, though.
I can send commands from the HP to print its own test page, that's OK. I can
tell it to scan, fax, etc. But when I try to print from an application
(Word, Excel, Acrobat, etc., (even lowly Notepad), I get various error
commands depending on the application.

Notepad says "The handle is invalid".
Word & PowerPoint says "Windows cannot print due to a problem with the
current printer setup"
Excel says "Your file could not be printed due to an error on HP... on
NE03:.."
Outlook give me various error messages depending on what I'm trying to print.
Acrobat says "A required resource cannot be loaded"

I can provide more info. But there has to be some way of diagnosing the
Windows system so I can absolve it of the problems, even if its HP's fault.
Worst case, I know I can fix this by reinstalling Windows. That'll be a pain
as I can't find my applications disk since moving.

Thanks.

Did anyone ever solve this? I've uninstalled and reinstalled. Add device from cd. Added printer manually. I can use the HP control panel to transfer images, scan, etc. But I just can't print.

Thanks

What model HP printer/fax/scanner?
Did you check for updated drivers from HP?
Sometimes, when all else fails, the USB subsystem (assuming a USB printer
interface) needs to be uninstalled
(Port & controller), and then reinstalled. The purpose of the USB uninstall
is to "break" the printer driver links, and then reinstall the drivers
before the printer is connected.

You should be aware that some multifunction devices actually have to be
installed incrementally, and even more than once to operate properly.
