Test Many Bookmarks in Firefox?

I have scads of bookmarks, many quite old. Is there a simple way to
check whether those websites are still out there and, if not, to
eliminate the corresponding bookmarks?

There's a nice little freebie here: http://aignes.com/products.htm that
will check them for you.

You should look at <AM-Deadlink>, a bit further down the list. It's free,
period. And ik works.
