Temporary Internet Files

Hamish

Norton Anti Virus is telling me I have adware.cdt in
C:\Documents and Settings\Dad\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5\41W3CJ0B\download[1].php

However when I examine C:\Documents and Settings\Dad\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files directory there are no sub directories in
it. I have checked my folder options for hidden files and directories and it
should be showing them.

I am using windows XP sp2 with IE 6. where are the folders hiding?

Try logging on with the built-in administrator account and navigating to
your TIF folder in Explorer. You can safely delete the entire Content.IE5
folder.

Note: If you're running XP Home Edition you'll have to restart in Safe Mode
to gain access to the Administrator account.

Content.IE5 is a Hidden System folder.

C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5

You do not have to *see* the Content.IE5 folder to delete its contents.

To delete *all* Temporary Internet Files...

1) Start | Run | Type: inetcpl.cpl | OK
Or right click the Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop.
Or: Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options.
Best to do this with all instances of Internet Explorer closed. Especially
if there are a large number of files.
2) On the General Tab, in the middle of the screen, click on Delete Files
3) Check the box Delete all offline content {This cleans >> C:\Documents
and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files AND
C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5 and \Content.MSO
4) Click on OK and wait for the hourglass icon to stop after it deletes the
temporary internet files
5) You can now click on Delete Cookies and click OK to delete cookies that
websites have placed on your hard drive.
-----

If you want, try this: Open IE | Tools | Internet Options | Advanced tab |
scroll down to the bottom | check: Empty Temporary Internet Files folder
when browser is closed | click Apply | OK. Entirely up to you, but if you
want to be rid of this, it is done automatically. Deletes the content of
C:\Documents and Settings\YourNameHere\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files but not the Content.IE5 or Content.MSO folders.

Also: Start IE | Tools | Internet Options | General tab | Days to keep
pages in history: 0 | Apply | OK.

Thanks for suggesting that, I actually thought I had done that the last time
the scanner ran and I could not find the files. But we all know what thought
did. (Well actually I don't!)
I have now only my cookies left, which I want to keep anyway, and the adware
file has gone.

I would still like to know how I could have "viewed" my hidden folder, and
in fact if it is still there but empty. I am running XP professional with
only one account which is an administrator, with no password so I go
straight through the logon screen. (The guest account is turned off).

Thanks for the help

Following up on my previous post, the only way to view the Content.IE5
folder that's associated with your account is to log on with another account
that has administrative privileges. The best account to use for this is the
built-in Administrator account that exists on every Windows XP machine. The
easiest way to do this is to start in Safe Mode. Here's how:

1.Restart the computer. After the Power On Self Test (POST), press the F8
key.
2.On the Windows Advanced Options menu, use the ARROW keys to select Safe
Mode, and then press ENTER.
3.When you are prompted to select the operating system to start, select
Microsoft Windows XP edition (where edition is the edition of Windows XP
that is installed), and then press ENTER.
4.On the "To begin, click your user name screen", click Administrator.
5.Type the administrator password, and then press ENTER.
Note In some cases, the Administrator password may be set to a blank
password. In this case, do not type a password before you press ENTER.
6.Click Yes to acknowledge that Windows is running in safe mode.

Once in Safe Mode, go to Start -> Control Panel -> Folder Options. On the
View tab, Make sure that "Show hidden files and folders" is selected and
uncheck "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)". Now, go to
Start -> Run -> Explorer. Navigate to
C:\Documents and Settings\Dad\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\. You
can now safely delete your Content.IE5 folder. You can now restart your PC.
Keep in mind that when you log back on with your account, Windows creates a
fresh Content.IE5 folder.

If you try this procedure with no success, post back because there are other
ways of accomplishing your goal.
