Temporary Internet Files

Under Local Settings/Application Data I have many files under both "Temp"
and "Temporary Internet Files" I had Indexing Service turned on for a long
time, just turned it off.

Should they be, and what are they for? Deleting Temporary Internet Files in
IE Tools/Internet Options/General doesn't remove them. Should it?

temporary files are created by programs, the internet files are for your
browser. There should be no reason to index them (I turned off that
"feature" a long time ago). some programs don't clear up temp files, you can
remove them.

They are all the Files/docs/web pages opened on that account.
You can safely remove them, anything under Temp can be safely removed unless
you elected an application to be installed on that directory.
You can remove them manually and run Disk clean Up, you are right clearing
the caches doesn't remove them.
Or you can use an utility like crap cleaner:
http://www.ccleaner.com
Be careful using this tool, read the help file with to understand how to use
it properly without damaging or deleting a system file.

The normal location for the TIF folder is...
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5
or
C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name Here\Local Settings
\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

I had something create Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5 here...
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temp\Temporary Internet
Files\Content.IE5

I have no idea what created it. I deleted
Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
from
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temp
and it has not been recreated.

Paste the following line into Start | Run and click OK...

%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temp

Delete the Temporary Internet Files under Temp. Windows will not let you
delete the other one.

I just got a new machine about three weeks ago and installed Windows XP Pro
SP2 on it. I had been running Windows XP Pro SP1 on my old machine. I got
a trojan on this machine in the first week. Sure glad SP2 is so safe. LOL
I thought that SP2 might have created the goofy TIF folder. I do not know
for sure, but I wouldn't be surprised if the trojan hadn't created it.

Well - live and learn
OK - I see what you all mean. I have cleaned up the Temp file, but it is
interesting to me that Tools/Internet Options/General/TIF/Delete files
doesn't. (Reminds me of the similar command in Win98 - it didn't either.)
I see new clutter is already building in the Temp folder - just have to stay
on top if it I guess.

To delete *all* of your Temporary Internet Files...

1) Start | Run | Type: inetcpl.cpl | Click OK
Or right click the Internet Explorer icon on your Desktop
Or Start | Settings | Control Panel | Internet Options
Best to do this with all instances of Internet Explorer closed. Especially
if there are a large number of files. Also close OE.
2) On the General Tab, in the middle of the screen, click on Delete Files
3) Check the box: Delete all offline content {This cleans >>
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
AND
%userprofile%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5
and \Content.MSO (Created by an MS Office program)}
4) Click on OK and wait for the hourglass icon to stop after it deletes the
temporary internet files
5) You can now click on Delete Cookies and click OK to delete cookies that
websites have placed on your hard drive.
6) You can also click on the Clear History button to empty your History
folder.

Note: If you do NOT select the Delete all offline content box, not
everything will be cleaned out.

Windows Internet Explorer 7 does not have a Delete all offline content
option.
