Temporary Internet Files folder will not empty

A

Andy I.

Hi,

When I delete TIF's (IE | TOOLS | INTERNET OPTIONS | DELETE COOKIES | DELETE
FILES and OFFLINE CONTENT | CLEAR HISTORY),

and then check the TIF folder (MY COMPUTER | DOCUMENTS AND SETTINGS | ANDY
| TEMPORARY INTERNET FILES | OPEN), the folder is empty,

but if I right-click the folder | OPEN | PROPERTIES, it shows 9 files, 11
folders, 2.54 MB!!

I'd greatly appreciate an explanation, and better still, a cure.

What is it that remains? Dowloaded Program files or?

You need to delete the contents of this folder.

C:\Documents and Settings\Andy\Local
Settings\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5

This folder will not be visible from your account even when
you've configured XP to show all hidden files and folders. To
view this folder, do the following;

Open your Temporary Internet Files folder.
Click in the address bar at the top of the window so the path
to that folder is highlighted.
Hit the right arrow key on your keyboard.
Enter the following next to Temporary Internet Files in the
address bar.

\Content.IE5

Hit the Enter key.
Delete all of the subfolders you find in the Content.IE5
folder.

If you're curious about the nature of this folder, do a Google
search for Content.IE5 folder.

There are a number of free utilities that will clean up the
contents of this folder automatically. One such program is
CCleaner which is available here.

http://www.ccleaner.com/

When you first use this program, I'd suggest you uncheck all
items on the Applications tab and leave only two items checked
on the Windows tab, Temporary Internet Files and Delete
Index.dat files. As you become more familiar with the program's
operation, you can add other items to the list to be deleted. I
don't suggest ever using the registry cleaner component.

Good luck

Nepatsfan

Thanks Neil.
How would I "unhide" system files etc.?

I don't know what remains, Gerry, because, as I said, the folder is "empty".

Thanks Nepasfan.

The only entries in the Content.IE5 folder were two! one folder "042X2J0"
3.46 kb, and one .dat file "INDEX.dat 1.78 MB (a WORD file)" which I
couldn't delete ("being used by another program. Close any prog........").
No other program is open.

Puzzled.

Hello again Nepasfan,

I installed CCleaner. Apparently it removed only 0.67 MB.
The TIF folder is "empty", but Properties show 5 files, 3 folders,
32.2KB........ Still, quite an improvement.
Content.IE5 contains the WORD index.dat file, 32KB.
