Dr. Indera

hello,

under this path Temporary Internet Files - -> Content.IE5 folders, i have
several folders, that currently have 170 mb worth of files.
i have some questions about these folders and files.

1) can i delete them?
2) if i delete them will i mess anything up?
3) is there a way to have all of these files and folders deleted every time
i log off automatically?

thank you

The folder you refer to is a temporary store for web pages you visit when on-line. This helps speed up access to the pages you visit regularly

1) Yes it is safe to delete them. Go to Tools / Internet Options and click the button marked "Delete Files"
2) You cannot mess anything up by doing this
3) You can get internet explorer to delete these files automatically when you close the browser..
a) Go to Tools / Internet Options
b) Click on the Advanced button
c) Scroll down almost to the bottom and click "Empty Temporary Internet Files folder when browser is closed" optio

Good luck

You can't while logged on as the user who owns it, but if you have another
logon with rights to that folder, you can delete it. Doing so causes no
problem, and it's an easy way to get rid of a bloated index.dat file.

It's a system folder and Microsoft recommends against it. That's why I said what I said. There are knowledge base articles on this. Actually from Windows 98 there is a registration procedure that has to be done when deleting the TIF. Not sure about Windows 2000 since I don't do it. But hey whatever works and I believe your solution can be an alternative. I would clean out the folder but leave the folder itself alone. Right-click IE icon on desktop | Properties | Delete Files... | Do NOT check ofline content | OK periodically should avoid this in the future.

hi george,

i'm not manually deleting any of the folders.

i just delete the files with the option in internet explorer.

thanks

hi gary,

my index.dat file is 15 mb.
does that fall into the bloated category?

if so, should i delete it? if you say yes, i take it that it will
automatically be re-created when i re-boot.

thanks

hi frank,

yes, for a while i was very low on hard drive space - down to 3 gb.
so i started going through folders deleting files that i didn't need.
when i looked at the defrag report, tons of files in this folder were on the
list, which is what prompted me to go "check" things out.
i had almost a gb of temp internet file data .

thanks again

Hi Indera,

glad you found the advice useful. I notice you have had a lot of replies on this subject.

On the question "Is 15mb Bloated?", it probably doesn't have to be that
big, but unless you are short of hard disk space, it probably isn't worth
removing it.
