All of my folders are temporary -- except the E:/My Documents folder.
All of the files contained therein are permanent. If a program file is
in an other directory, that program file is deleted on the next boot.

How can I make additional folders permanent so that the new files
therein are there after reboot?

Thank you,

Barry Karas

All of your folders should not be temporary. What did you do to make these
other folders temporary? Undo it.

On my system, data files are stored in My Documents, one of the Application
Data folders for my user account, or in a folder that I designate within a
program's option screens. This is standard operations on any XP system I've
ever used.

Some conditions where XP would not store user info/data:

If you are logging on with a guest account, no user specific info is saved.

If XP detects corruption in your every day user profile, it gives you a
temporary account for access but no user data is saved. Repair the account
or create a new one and transfer your data files over to it.

Domain user accounts: User data may be stored on the server, locally or
both. This is a configuration choice made by the network administrator(s).
If the current configuration is not suitable for you needs, see the network
administrator for getting this changed.

My computer [Dell laptop with Windows XP Pro with S.P.2] was set up like
this.

I will contact the person who set it up. Hopefully, he will respond --
although I'm not holding my breath.

Good luck, Barry. If someone else set it up, they have moved the user store
over to a directory on the server. That's not uncommon for a desktop that
stays in one place. Laptops, however, need to have a local and remote
situations addressed. Sounds like the person that set it up, skipped
something in the local setup. Hopefully they can fix it for you.

Suggestion: In the meantime... Try creating a new user account. Work with
it a little bit to make sure it is keeping the user files locally as
expected. If that works, consider transferring your data over to that
account. Or at least using this account for work that is to be retained on
the laptop only.
