Temporary Internet Files Exceeds Allotted Disk Space

I have the Temporary Internet Files allotted disk space set at 1000 MB
(about 1gb). Examination of the Temporary Internet Files folder
Properties yields a size of 1.52 GB (containing about 55,000 files and
33 folders).

Why isn't it limiting at the 1000 MB that it's been allotted?

Has anyone else found their Temporary Internet Files folder Properties
exceed their set limit?

Hi,
I don't know why your TIF folder is larger than the 1000 MB limit, but
that's an unnecessarily large Temporary Internet Files folder.

Something around 75-100 MB would be a fairly common recommendation.

Hope this helps,

Since the TIF holds lots of small files you can expect the "Cluster
Slack Space" effect to greatly increase the "Size on Disk" value.

That's way to big. Windows gets confused and it slows down IE. It should
be 50 to 100 MB and I prefer 50.

And I leave mine at 100 MB. But then again, I'm on dialup, so I really
need it (having more in the cache really helps!). I suspect 1000 MB
might be pushing its limits "a bit". But I also use CacheSentroPro, which
does considerably better than window's management of the TIF cache, and it's
quite customizable.

Thanks for your replies.

The reason I had the allotted disk space set to 1000 MB is because
when I initially went to adjust it, it was defaulted at some large
number of GB's. The pointer slide setting's "lowest" three position
values were 1, 763, and 1526 MB (all around the lowest tick mark).
So, it seemed that about 1000 MB was expected to be reasonable. I
have an 80 GB disk.

I very much appreciate your feedback on that point and do feel more
comfortable with the 50 MB.

Do you think I should first Delete all the Temp-Internet files and
then set the allotted size to 50 MB or just reset the size to 50 MB?

If it were me, I'd probably delete the TIF and then reset it (since the
change is so large)

I've recently converted from Dial-up to Cable High Speed Internet. So
I was wondering if the Temp-Internet Files cache was even really
needed any more.

Is there a way of turning off the Temp-Internet Files cache? If not,
would setting its allotted disk space to Zero or its lowest accepted
setting be reasonable? Or is this just Not a good idea?

You will forever need a Internet File cache because any browser
(Firefox or IE) can not read / use the files directly over the web.
Every web pages must be downloaded off the web in order to permit it
to be displayed.

Just use a reasonable value, say 15 Megabytes and from the Advanced
options tic/check "Empty TIF folder when browser is Closed". It's also
a good idea to check the "Do not save encrypted pages to disk", just
above the empty TIF option as a security measure.

Thank you (smlunatick and R.McCarty) for your very helpful replies.
This kind of info seems so important that you'd think there'd be some
kind of pointer/box to explain it in the TIF Settings dialog box.
Where might one come across this kind of information?

Thanks again,
