I save a particular slide as .pot file and it appears as a useable template
but I can't apply it to any slides. Original templates that appear along
side appear when clicked.
What step am I missing???

It's probably the location of where you have saved the file.

Try clicking on the Browse link at the bottom of the pane. It will open a
dialog that shows where your available templates are. Do you see the folder
where you saved the file?
