Templates Location

I have been sent a word template and want to save it to
my computer, so that when anyone clicks n file>new a new
tab will appear and the template will be in that folder.

What is the location of the templates in word?

Look in tools >options > file locations > user templates. The folder
designated here is the one your template should go in (or a sub folder under
it). This applies to all Word and Windows versions (though the actual
locations may not be the same).
