I downloaded some FrontPage templates and do not know how to get them into
FrontPage. I had them in a zip file and they are on my desktop but cannot
figure out how to get them in FrontPage so that I can use them

Where did you download them from? Microsoft, or some other source? Are they
FrontPage templates, or web site templates that are frontpage compatible?
Frontpage compatible templates could just mean they are a collection of web
pages that you unzip into an FP web and FP can then work with them.

Hope this helps,

You should always check the site you downloaded from for installation instructions

FP Templates are either WEB Site or PAGE Templates
-in either case the template should be a folder (w/ the pages in it) name with a .tem extension
Stand alone PAGE go in
%USERDATA%\Application Data\Microsoft\FrontPage\Pages
WEB Site templates go in
%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\FrontPage\Webs

You first need to un-zip the compressed file to a folder on your hard drive
e.g. c:/my documents/my webs/whatever-web/, then in Frontpage, go to File>
Open > Web and select the folder called [whatever-web] where you unzipped
the files.

FP will ask/advise that it needs to convert the folder to a web, and ask "do
you want to convert this folder to a web" (respond YES).

FP will add all its usual special files. Then, you can go in and edit the
files as normal. (file, open, page etc).

As far as modifying the templates, that's up to you. As already point out,
the site you got them from will most likely be the best place to obtain info
on modifying them with your own content. Mostly it's a matter of opening
the page, replacing the sample text "Lorem, Carpe Deum, Anno Domini...blah
blah blah" with your content.
