had a Trojan exe in a folder under \IE5\content\ . but I couldn't
get to it in Windows Explorer.

Why is that prohibited? even tho I have selected 'Show hidden files'.

Try My Computer/Control Panel/Internet Options and under Temporary Internet
Files, delete files

The Temporary Internet files folder is a complex structure, and Explorer
does not show everything in it - OTOH it throws in cookies, which are
stored in an entirely different place. To clear out TIF totally, boot
with F8 to the menu, to take
Safe Mode - Command Prompt only

There use CD to change in C: to TIF with
CD \Documents and settings\yourname
CD Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
CD Content.IE5
then
DEL *.* /S /F
