Temp files from Word have to be deleted manually

I earlier posted this in the Word newsgroup, and it was suggested to me to
go here.

I have noticed in both Office 2003 and 2007, that after opening up Word and
using a file, then closing it, I get those temp file icons in whatever
folder the original document was in--but they don't go away, even after
closing out Word. Most of the time a reboot will take care of it, but on
occasion I've seen these types of files months after using the original doc
itself. I was advised to have Office 2003 do a "fix and repair" from within
the program itself (not a repair install), but seeing that the same thing is
happening in Office 2007, I'm not sure that it was a bug in my installation,
so much as a particular feature that I selected/deselected. Is there
something I can do to have these files disappear on their own, without my
having to manually delete them?

One suggestion I got was to right-click on a file and look in the security
tab. When I right-clicked on any file (My Documents, or a sub-folder), and
selected Properties, I could see no Security tab. I don't know if this is
because I the My Documents folder is in a separate partition (D drive--the
same hard drive, but a separate partition).

Afraid I can't give you a definitive answer but I too see this
occasionally and would be interested in any replies. One or two things
occur to me but they are just for consideration:

Could it be that the Temp files folder needs emptying (Disc Cleanup)? I
know you can alter the size of the TIF (Temporary Internet Files) folder
but can you do the same with the Temp folder? It might be that Word uses
the original folder if the temp file folder is full.

Do you use a backup program? I use BT Digital Vault (Auto Backup) and
sometimes, if it has trouble connecting with the server, it places temp
files in My Documents.

Have you got Word configured to save different versions? I don't know
which folder these are kept in.

As far as I remember, you have to be signed in as Administrator to
access the Security tab (take possession of files etc.), although I
would have thought that this route would be a bit drastic.

Just some ideas to mull over while we wait for somebody who DOES know.

Sorry, should have said "Do you use an INTERNET backup program?" such as
Digital Vault or SkyDrive.
