Temp Internet Files location

F

Fred

My Tools\Internet Options indicate that my Temp Internet files are in
c:\documents and Settings\Fred\Local Settings\Temporay Internet files.
However there is no Temp Internet File folder there ? There is a Temp folder
with some files but not Temporay Internet type.
I would expect my Temp Internet files to be in Win/Temp/Temp Internet
files/Content.Ie5 but there are no files there !
What gives ?

They are hidden files/folders unless you make them visible and they *will
be* located where the Internet Options indicate - unless some group policy
has redirected that folder elsewhere (are you in a domain?)

Its hidden. Either change your settings to view hidden and system
files, or just type the path in the tool bar at the top. Its there,
just can't see it.

Thanks for reply
No hidden files, show all files, matter of fact I have two Dell computers
that are the same. Not sure what you mean by domain.
I have both computers on my home network.

Just copy and paste the address in your address bar.
C:\Documents and Settings\Alan\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files
You've looked at tools -> internet options -> View in explorer right?
Show system & hidden radio button is on?

I have no problem going to any folder, the folder is Temp and not Temp
Internet Files. The files are not Internet type, some kind of temp files.
The only Temporay Internet Folder is under the Windows/Temp folder but there
is nothing there.

Simplistic Test:

- Open Internet Explorer...

If v6:
- Click on "Tools" at the top and select "Internet Options..." from the
drop-down menu.
- Select the "General" tab and click on the "Settings..." button in the
"Temporary Internet Files" section.
- Click on the "View Files..." button.

This will open the folder where your Temporary Internet Files are actually
stored. The address will be in the "Address" field at the top. Highlight
it, press CTRL+C to copy it and paste the results into a response to this
newsgroup posting.

If v7:
- Click on "Tools" at the top and select "Internet Options..." from the
drop-down menu.
- Select the "General" tab and click on the "Settings" button in the
"Browsing History" section.
- Click on the "View Files..." button.

This will open the folder where your Temporary Internet Files are actually
stored. The address will be in the "Address" field at the top. Highlight
it, press CTRL+C to copy it and paste the results into a response to this
newsgroup posting.

P.S. - You now know the path... As do we. ;-) Do *not* just go by what it
says - actually click on View Files" and let it OPEN the folder. I do not
have a "Content.Ie5" folder anymore - nor do I suspect you will.

Under tools it says the temp Inter files are in, c:\documents and
Settings\Fred\Local Settings\Temporay Internet/.
But when you go there it only shows a Temp folder and no Temp Inter file
folder or files. However if I click on the view under tools it shows the
files located in c:\documents and Settings\Fred\Local Settings\Temporay
Internet/.
I'm not sure if it makes any difference if all works ok.

But when you go there it only shows a Temp folder and no Temp Inter
file folder or files. However if I click on the view under tools it
shows the files located in c:\documents and Settings\Fred\Local
Settings\Temporay Internet/.
I'm not sure if it makes any difference if all works ok.

So - when you click on "View Files" it takes you to where the files are.
When you try to browse manually - you cannot. If you use the "View Files"
button and then go "UP" a directory in the Windows Explorer window - can you
see the "\Temporay Internet Files\" folder listed in the file listings for
folder before it?

If not - it is as everyone has told you - you still have hidden and system
files turned on (set so you do not see them). It's that simple.

In Windows Explorer (My Computer) choose "Tools" and "Folder Options".
Follow that up by looking under the "View" tab. In the "advanced Settings"
section, ensure that the following is done as indicated:

- "Show hidden files and folders" selected.
- "Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)" is unchecked.

Once verified - click Apply, Click OK. Close all windows and open Windows
Explorer/My Computer and browse to the location again.

Also - you typed the path as:
"c:\documents and Settings\Fred\Local Settings\Temporay Internet/"

Is that a typo? (Thus why I asked for you to Copy and Paste the actual path
from the Address bar so there would be no Typos...) Is it actually:

"C:\Documents and Settings\Fred\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\"?

Try this experiment next:

Start button --> RUN --> type in:
"%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\"
(With the qutation marks) --> Click OK.

Does it open the folder in question?
(%USERPROFILE% equates to "C:\Documents and Settings\Fred" in your case.
You can type the %USERPROFILE% thing because that is an internal environment
variable for all Windows XP systems.)

Here is what I did to solve part of the problem;
Under tools I move the Temp Intenet folder toWin/Temp/Temporay Internet
Folder. However I could not see any files in the folder or in Conten.ie5. I
then under tools move the folder back to c:\documents and
Settings\Fred\Local Settings\. And for some reason it allow the Temp
Internet folder to appear with the files !!!! So now when I go to
c:\documents and Settings\Fred\Local Settings\ Temp Internet folder is there
with all the files !!! There is no Conten.i5 or any sub folders.
I have no idea why that worked. By the way I don't use hidden files on any
of my 3 computers.
Now my question is why don't I have the files in Win\temp\Temp Internet
Files Folder\Conten.ie5 Folder\ and all the sub folders ? Maybe I should
just let stay as is.

It just happened to me also. The folder was changed to a "protected
operating system" folder, not hidden folder. I created a new user and the
same problem happened. It may have something to do with the last MS update.

Thanks, but I repeat I have no problems with Hidden Files. I think I now
understand why the Internet Temps are located in c:\documents and
Settings\Fred\Local Settings\Temporay Internet files. I do see all the
Content.Ie5 folders at that location. I mislead in my last post. Things are
as they should be at this point.

The problem here is that Explorer is set up by default to not display a
number of folders, including History and Temporary Internet Files. This
setting is controlled in the registry in the following key:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\Winlogon

Now look at the value "ExcludeProfileDirs". Any folder listed in that value
will be hidden in Explorer, regardless of the settings of "show hidden" and
"show system" buttons in folder options. To allow Explorer to view those
folders, edit the "ExcludeProfileDirs" value and remove all the folder names.
