temp file folder - "read only" and hidden

Man, I must be missing something simple.

I'm trying to install Adobe Reader 8, and I'm getting an error saying either
the temp file folder is full, or I don't have "write" access" to it.

I'm logged on as the local admin.

All updates have been installed.

I've located the temp file folder, and have deleted everything out of it.

The folder is marked "read only", and the "hidden" check box is checked, and
grayed out.

If I uncheck the "read only" box and close out, when I go back to the
properties of the folder it's immediately checked again.

In "folder view", I have the "show hidden files & folders" bullet checked.

I've tried going to a folder or 2 above the temp file folder to try and
remove the "inherited" permissions.

The local admin account has full access to the folder.

How do I get it to be "unhidden", and how do I uncheck the "read only" box?

Thanks,

Jim

nope, that didn't work. Turned UAC back on, rebooted, tried Adobe Reader 8
again.

Still getting the "The temp folder is on a drive that is full or is
inaccessible. Free up space on the drive or verify that you have write
permission on the temp folder"

The temp folder still is at "read" only permission. I have not been able to
change it's setting (still haven't been able to try Hagop's suggestion)

that didn't work either. ran the attrib command on the temp folder, but it's
still set as "read only". ran it w/ the "-r" and w/ the "-r +s" switches.
Rebooted, but it's still set at "read only".

The doc you pointed me towards specified every OS but Vista - not sure if
that command will work on Vista.

In XP/W2k, the temp folder is here:

C:\Documents and Settings\"name"\Local Settings\Temp

In Vista, the only one I can find is here:

C:\Users\"name"\AppData\Local\Temp (this is the one that's read only)

Is this the correct folder, and the one that Adobe is attempting to write
to? (I'm logged on as local admin)

Folders are neither "read only" nor "not read only". That is why the box for
read only is a blue square rather than either a check mark (read only) or
empty (not read only). This item is not valid and not changeable for
folders.

Thanks Michael. It is indeed the blue square, and not the check mark.

Given that this temp folder is set to read only w/ the blue square and
cannot be changed, and Adobe needs to be able to write to the temp folder
(providing this is the temp folder it's trying to write to), is there a
workaround regarding this?

Abobe wants to write to the temp folder, Vista won't let it.

The folder is NOT set to read only. All folders have the box with the blue
square to signify that the setting is not useful with a folder. That you
cannot write to the folder has nothing to do with read-only attribute. That
said as you cannot write to the folder (I presume that you have actually
tried to manual put something into the folder and that it fails) then your
problem is probably with access permissions. Right click on the folder and
select properties - security, for me there is System, my account, and
Administrators, all with the same permissions including 'full control'.

As an aside, have you turned off Vista system security features? I have read
that Adobe requires that the system be secured for their installations to
work, just rumor, don't actually know that to be true.
