every once in a while a telephone will ring when I'm
doing nothing in particular, like reading mail
downloading something. This is not my regular house
phone. It is embedded in the computer somewhare. Why???

It sounds like you have some sort of sound event set from some program.
Since you provided so little information, that's as specific as I can
get. Look in the Sounds applet in Control Panel and see what sound
events are set. Use Task Manager to see what is running when you hear
the "telephone" sound. Look in the Preferences of those running
programs for sound settings. You'll have to be your own Sherlock about
this.

Hi, Jerry.

Do you mean that you hear an audible ring? Is it coming from the computer
speakers? Or from the computer case itself? Or from a telephone instrument
somewhere?

Do you see anything in Control Panel | Sounds and Audio Devices | Sounds
that might be a clue? You can test each of the sound bytes (by clicking the
black triangle icon to the left of the Browse button) until you find the one
that you've been hearing, then see which event in which program is
triggering it. Before doing that, though, you might just scroll down the
list of programs to see if one you don't recognize has snuck in.
