Tel & Internet dual Connection-Not working-Help

My dual connector which connects my telephone and cable for the modem does
not allow either to work if both are connected.
If I disconnect the modem the phone works
If I disconnect the phone the modem works
I did have a problem with my extension to another phone but I am now
directly connected to the socket which does not include the extension
Can anyone suggest what is wrong and what is the solution please

Further information
BT have checked the line and it is OK
Since my last message I have found that when both are connected I am able to
connect to the Internet after 3 or 4 goes at trying to connect.Up until then
I get a message"No dial tone"
But with both connected if I try and ring in via my mobile I get the message
"busy"
So it looks like my internet connection is causing the problem

I've read your message several times through, and I'm still having a
hard time visualizing your setup. It sounds to me like you are trying
to use the same phone line for two different things at the same time
(Internet dialup access and phone access). This won't work. But I may
be misinterpreting your post. So, did your current setup ever work? If
yes, what changed?

Because I am not yet on Broadband ( expected later this year) I can only use
either the phone or the internet.
By using the simple dual connector into the wall socket I connect the phone
line and also the internet line.How else could I do it?
I have used this set up for the last year successfully.
But now when I have finished with the internet I have to unplug the Internet
connection in order to receive calls. I can still send calls with both
connected but not receive calls!

You say this worked before so I have to take your word for it, although
I don't see how a splitter could make a difference. I have a splitter
on one of my lines with one cable going to the portable phone and one
to the regular phone/answering machine. However, it is still the same
telephone number and if I use the regular phone the portable is just an
extension, not a separate number. If I use either phone, the single
telephone line is in use and anyone dialing in would get a busy signal.
So again, if your setup worked once, what changed?

The only change is that when I had the original fault with my phone line I
had it checked by BT and they said my external line was OK and suggested I
plug into the direct connection bypassing my extension phone This appeared
to work so I assumed that it was a a fault on the extension line.
Their charge for fixing it was £55 callout fee and £60 per hour for the time
taken!
I decided to leave the extension disconnected!
That is the only change!
I now also find that when I try and go on line I get the message No dial
tone but if I perseveer I eventually get a connection

Well, I'm no telephone expert, but obviously the change made by leaving
the extension disconnected made your previous setup not work. Dialup
connections to the Internet are only as good as your telephone line and
it sounds like your line is not a good one. This has not got anything
to do with the computer but is an issue with your telephone company. I
know they are expensive - they are here in the States, too - but that's
just the way it is. If you are getting broadband in a month, my
suggestion would be for you to live with things the way they are until
then. Otherwise you will have to either stop bypassing the extension
and/or get your telephone wiring repaired.
