Tearing my hair out! USB 2 and Windows XP

S

Steve

Last week bought a PCI USB 2 card for my PC. My motherboard only has USB
1.1 and I bought a new scanner so I thought it would be a good idea to
upgrade to USB2 at the same time. However, I am having no end of trouble.

I installed the USB2 card with no problems, and Windows detected the card
and automatically installed it on boot up and Device Manager reports
everything appears to be working fine. Next I connected up my scanner to
the USB2 port.

Now, the moment I switch on my scanner, Windows freezes immediately and it
is impossible to get back control unless I reboot the computer (CTRL-ALT-DEL
does not work).

If I plug the scanner into my standard USB 1.1 ports there is no problem,
except scanning at high resolutions is very slow. I've been to the Microsoft
site and installed all the latest updates but to no avail.

I've tried various settings over the last week and nothing seems to work.

PLEASE can someone help me :)

System Specs:

Motherboard: ASUS P4S533
Processor: Intel P4 2.66ghz
Memory: 512k
Operating system: Windows XP SP1

Scanner: Epson Perfection 3170 Photo

USB 2 card: Sweex 5 port PCI (NEC chipset)

Try this, Open the device manager and delete ALL USB ports
and hubs, this will clear the currently loaded drivers for
1.1 and 2.0. Disconnect all the USB cables. Reboot. This
should install one set of correct drivers.
You my be well advised to also uninstall the scanner and
install the scanner software before you connect the scanner.

Also, check the BIOS to see what the USB settings are
currently.

Thanks for the advice Jim. I'll try your suggestions and report back.

OK. I deleted all USB connections/hubs, then uninstalled my scanner
drivers. I unplugged all USB devices then did a reboot. Windows once again
detected the USB2 card and installed the drivers automatically.

I then reinstalled my scanner drivers, and then plugged in the scanner USB
lead and turned on. Yet again the PC froze. No change there.

Is there anything in the BIOS I should be particularly looking for?

I don't think the problem is the USB. Try some other
device, even a mouse or keyboard in the USB 2.0 card just to
be sure. I suspect the scanner software, make sure it is
correct version for your scanner and that the scanner is not
defective.

If you have USB on your mainboard, go into the BIOS and turn it off.

Not sure what the original post was, but see this if it will not
install correctly:
Does the 'canot install' message include 'data unknown'? If so, the
problem is with permissions; see:

Did you download and install the latest software from this site?

Thanks so much to everyone for their help and advice so far. I have (kind
of) discovered the problem, but don't have a solution as yet.

After getting nowhere yesterday, I decided to completely reformat my drive
and do a fresh install of Windows. Once XP was installed I went to the MS
site and installed all the latest updates.

After that, I installed my scanner S/W and to my surprise the scammer worked
via USB2 perfecty. I thought my problems were over. However, I now think
the culprit is my soundcard, which is a Soundblaster Audigy 2. As soon as I
installed my soundcard S/W the freezing problem returned. If I uninstall
the soundcard S/W the problem goes away.

So, it appears the problem is the SB softward. I have installed the latest
updates from SoundBlaster.com but this doesn't help.

Does this give you guys any clues?

Steve.

Try putting the USB or the sound card in a different slot so
they have reassigned IRQ.

Hi Jim.

Thanks for the advice, and I *think* your suggestion might just have worked.
Originally the cards were located right next to each other, so I moved them
as far apart as possible, and so far (touch wood) there have been no
crashes.

Thanks to you and everyone here for the great advice, I REALLY appreciate
it!

Steve.

He sure does - I saw it on his original post where he gave his system
specs.

What does a link to troubleshooting AGP/PCI Video cards have to do
with a USB Card and Sound Card Conflict? Also, if you don't know the
original post - why spout off about a non related subject making no
coherent sense.
