TDK VeloCD 16/10/40x Kacked

In the middle of a load, the above stopped recognizing the program CD
(Micro Picture It, others checked also). The wiring has been checked,
the Device Manager says it is ok. The Windows Explorer cannot see the
disk in the device. Firmware was updated. Uses Windows drivers. It
just stopped working. Windows XP Home edition.

It sounds like the drive simply died. I've had two do that over the years.
