tcp/ip issues post xp sp2 install

after installing a new copy of xp home with sp2, my network card won't work.
using the command prompt, i can't renew the ip address, as it comes up as an
operation that was attempted on something that isn't a socket. if i
configure the tcp/ip settings manually, i can connect to my home network
fine, but still no connection to the cable modem and the internet. i have
tried a different (new) linksys card, same result. the other thing that is
different than the other machines on my home network is that the node type
comes up as unknown, and on the other machines it is hybrid. i am stumped,
(as was the microsoft tech i used yesterday)

This is usually the result of a corrupted tcp/ip stack.
Remove tcp/ip and re-install it. This usaullay fixes it.
