Recently my PC has been hanging if left switched on for a while. I have been unable to close any programmes or restart via task manager as I get a taskmgr.exe application error: the application failed to initialize properly (0xc000012d).

I am unable to restart via Start/Turn off computer as sometimes the only option in the drop down menu is shutdown.

I have Windows XP Pro with SP3 installed.

Thanks

Have you looked at the Event Viewer to see if there are any clues?

Control panel, admin tools, event viewer.

It looks too me that something has get in your computer, possibly a malware or spyware etc. You can try any antispyware software to check. Also your safe mode is logging normally ? If so try this antimalware free program which is very handy SDFix and also try the SmitFraudfix program SmitFraudFix . Both can run under safe mode, then install a antispyware program like Super antispyware or malwarebytes and do a thorough check to remove any other threats.
