Tasks sometimes will not open - Outlook 2003

Hi,
I am currently having an issue with Outlook 2003. At the office, my
boss frequently sends me tasks to do from his machine as well as
others to keep track of what we've all got to do. However, when I
receive them, I cannot always open them. When it arrives in my inbox,
the Reader Pane goes grey and a message appears at the top saying
"Outlook cannot open this item in the Reader Pane. Double-Click this
item to open it in a new window."

Yet, if I double-click the item, I get a pop-up reading "Outlook
cannot perform this action on this type of attachment...". He sends
the task directly from his tasks list and does not attach them to an
email as such.

This does not happen every time, but probably close to 50%. The only
way to delete the 'faulty' task is to drag it to the junk email folder
and empty that - I can't even move it to a different folder on the
branch, including Deleted Items.

I have applied Office 2003 Service Pack 2 and the latest junk email
filter. No other updates have been installed. I am only aware of one
plugin that is active in Outlook and that is the sync feature for
Mobile PhoneTools (for my Motorola V3).

I urgently need help!

I'm having the same problem in Outlook 2007. Someone accepts a task, I get
the email that they accepted but I cannot delete it. I get the same message:

cannot open this item. outlook cannot do this action on this type of
attachment
