Hi I hope I am posting this to the correct group. Using XP Pro. Two gigs
of ram p4.
I have a strange problem. If I right click on the task bar and choose
task manager, it doesn't come up for about 5 minutes and then when it
does it hangs.

Here is the unusual part. If I start taskmgr.exe with the default
keyboard call (ctrl shift esc) it comes right up and it is quick and
normal.

I could live with it if I had to,but, I am really curious as to how and
why this can be happening.

Anybody have any idea on what I can try?
Thank You

David Smith

ctrl shift esc? Have you tried Ctrl Alt Del? Does it work?

To Enable or Disable the CTRL+ALT+DELETE Sequence

Control-Alt-Delete - Use Crtl + Alt + Delete to Restart the Computer

Normally when you press Ctrl + Alt + Delete the Windows task list is
displayed. Using this tweak the key combination will instead reboot the
computer. Open the SYSTEM.INI file found in the Windows directory using
Notepad.

Under the [386Enh] section create or modify the value named "KybdReboot".
Set the value to equal "True" to cause the system to reboot on the key
combination or "False" to show the task list. For example:

[386Enh]
KybdReboot=False

Restart Windows for the change to take effect.

Sorry I don't have an answer for the original question.

Well, maybe. You have to remember that Windows is a strange beast that
will not ever be fully understood. Just don't worry about it and use
the CTRL-SHIFT-ESC sequence. Secondly, it may be because when you click
on the task bar you are using the explorer.exe service and it may be
busy doing other things. The CTRL-SHIFT-ESC sequence bypasses explorer.exe.

Finally, BYTE, CTRL-SHIFT-ESC will bring up task manager directly. Dave
does not need to do all the things you suggested. If you've ever used a
Win2000 box or even a domain connected WinXP box, you will learn to know
and love the CTRL-SHIFT-ESC sequence. CTRL-ALT-DELETE will bring up a
box with six (I think) options to choose from. Task Manager is one of
them. CTRL-SHIFT-ESC will go DIRECTLY to Task Manager.
