Taskmanager needed to run certain programs ???

I am running Windows XP Pro and have a problem showing up suddenly. When I
try to open certain views in Quicken 2004 or even in a Word document,
containing pictures, the screen remains white, sometimes freezes. It helps
then to open the task manager with Crtl-Alt-Del..... the mentioned program
work fine now.
What is wrong. Which of my files is missing or corrupted.
Any help would be appreciated.
