I just started using XP. On older versions of Windows (ME
etc) When two files were open with the same application,
two separate icons appeared on the task bar. With XP 1
icon appears with a (2) or (3) etc showing how many files
are open. But sometimes I find 2 separate icons open. How
is this controlled. I would rather have separate icons at
all times.

Right click the taskbar. Select Properties. Uncheck the box for "Group
similar taskbar buttons."
