Taskbar Switching Levels

I have noticed this on my PC at home and one at a location I work at. My
home PC is a fresh install of x64 and I initially thought it was a bug with
that OS. However this other system is a normal install of XP pro with SP2.

What happens is when I have more than one level to my task bar but have only
one level displayed, I need to use the arrows to go up and down through the
levels. However, the problem I'm having is when I click on a second or third
window after going to that level and selecting the window I want, it will
often (if not always) instead of switching to that window, switching to a
different level on the task bar. The level seems to be some sort of
"default" level because it changes from time to time. One day I may have 30
windows open and it'll switch to the second level each time if I'm in the
first or third levels. The next day it may switch to the first level.

This is really really really annoying. Has anyone seen this before and/or
know how to prevent it from happening?

I don't restart my computer very often so windows tend to accumulate. I'm
actually used to 2kPro where the window buttons can be smaller and fit more
on one level. I also don't group windows.

Patrick, I have never seen this behavior. I, too, often have many windows
open. I suggest as a first move that you reboot and see if this isn't the
result of the memory developing an accumulation of "junk".
