Taskbar - resize

I am working with XP Pro and the taskbar is twice the hight of the standard
taskbar display. I wish to reduce it to half the width (standard size) but
can not seem to do so. I have unlocked the taskbar and moved my cursor over
the top edge so that the curser changes to a double arrow and then tried to
drag it as you would normally but I am unable to do so. Can you please help.
