Why?

The area you are talking about is called the "Notification Area," or "System
Tray." It's the place where icons for running programs (usually programs
running in the background) show. In general, some programs put their icons
there automatically, and you don't get the choice of what goes there
(However there are third-party programs that let you minimize a program
there instead of to the main part of the taskbar.

If you are looking for a place to put an icon so you can quickly and easily
start the program it represents, that's not what the Notification Area is
for. That's the function of the Quick Launch Bar (normally on the left part
of the Task Bar, next to the Start button, although it can be moved
elsewhere).

If you want to put a program icon onto the Quick Launch Bar, first make sure
the Quick Launch Bar is visible (write back if you don't know how to do
this), then simply drag a shortcut icon there.

Ken, thank you so much, you're awesome!! I didn't know you could not put
this type of an icon on the nofication bar. I did follow your instructions
and I now have the calculator on the bar next to the start button. When I
installed the calculator icon, free download manager, and launch internet
explorer browser popped up also.
