Taskbar notification area button (arrow)

Occasionally the button(arrow) at the left of the
taskabar notification area just disappears and leaves all
the icons in view whether they are being used or not.
The only way I have found to get the button back is to
use system restore and go back to a point when the button
was there. Can anyone help me find how to keep it from
disappearing or to replace it without going through
system restore?
