taskbar - items do not minimize onto taskbar

my taskbar won't minimize any items to it. when i open a program and try to
minimize it onto the taskbar it dissapears from site . if i open the task
manager it is of course still open but not visible on the taskbar. how do i
reconfigure so that all my programs when minimized are visible on the taskbar?
