My taskbar has grown twice as deep, also when I right
click on the programmes in the taskbar, there is no
delete option to remove, no longer needed progs.

unlock taskbar
position cursor at top edge
get vertical <-->
drag top edge down
lock taskbar
done

Hi Ian,
drag to the normal size where cursor position cursor at top edge meets
with two arrow heads vertically.
Then right click on blank area of taskbar and lock it.

So now the Taskbar (TB) has 2 tiers. To return that to 1 tier:

Unlock the TB
Remove Quick Launch Toolbar (QL)
Remove *all* occupants of the TB
Drag the top edge of the TB down to one tier

Now, reverse the procedure:
Repopulate the TB
*Only then* put the QL back

Note: If QL is placed on the TB first before any other item, then the
remaining, empty portion of this TB will be made to be void of any other
item. Any additional item will then open a 2nd tier and move in there. It
seems odd, but if you look closer, you will see that in fact the QL extends
right up to the Notification Area (the clock).

The above procedure does not involve the use of Delete in the Context Menu,
which, in any case, you say is missing. A different issue that needs to be
looked into.

The rectangular bars in the middle of the Taskbar are *indicators* of open
(running) applications or windows. As Rory said, these cannot be just
'deleted', by design. To remove them, you have to close the applications or
windows the rectangular bars represent. Because 'delete' does not operate
here, so there is no Delete on the Context Menu. Likewise, there is no
Delete on the Context Menu for icons in the Notification (clock) Area. You
can delete icons on the Quick Launch toolbar, but bare in mind that these
are only remote on-and-off switches for the respective programmes, which
reside elsewhere.
