Recently my taskbar has shown a blank extra space. It has boundaries and I
can make the blank space larger or smaller but cannot get rid of it. Its as
if there were an invisible toolbar.

Can someone explain why it is there or, at least, how to get rid of it. It
is crowding out my other toolbars.

Thanks.

Repair the Taskbar manually. See David's post here:

-or-

Line 164. Restore Taskbar to Default Functionality

Note: You may lose all the existing Taskbar settings, and the additional
toolbars that you may've added earlier.
