Taskbar disappears

Hi,
Am using Windows XP (Home Ed.).
I am having this problem suddenly - whenever I maximize a window the
taskbar disappears even though the auto-hide is disabled. I can see if
Ctrl-Esc is pressed but if the focus is shifted back to the window, it
again disappers

Any idea what the problem could be.

Does this happen using F11 as well? Also is Keep the taskbar on top of
other windows checked?
