If I end an errant application in Task Manger, it dissapears from Taks
Manager's display panel - good; but when I try to end an process, nothing
seems to happen, and it remains on the display. Why?

Is the process a service?

It might be, I don't know. What are the implcations then? The sort of
processes I was trying to end, as I recall, included windows media player10
ones.

media player 10 isn't a service I'd just do a reinstall of MP10 if it's
acting up.

OK re MediaPLayer10; but as I say, I can not recall which processes it was
that I have tried to kill - I've installed so much software and had so many
things just hang. I'l have to make another posting the next time it
happens, I think. But my point was really this: if you do end a process,
surely it should disappear form the list?

If you end a running process, it *should* disappear from the list.
If it doesn't, one of the following could apply:

1) The process did end, but there was another instance of the same process
being run. (So you "still" see it on the list.) If you sort the list
alphabetically before you end a process, you will see how many occurences of
the one process are running.

2) There is another process or application that re-launches the one you're
trying to end. Generally, the only time I see this behaviour is when a
process is being run by one of those "determined" malware programs. If this
is the scenario, you may need to run Ad-Aware or SpyBot, or whatever
reputable program you have for removing crapware.

Thanks for all the help - I now have Spybot, and Ad-Aware, and more
importantly, I've sloved the riddle of my unresponding programs which
wouldn't end.
I now know the cause of my problem. Norton's so-called protection corrupted
many of my files, including part of its own Firewall. So far I've only
reinstalled the firewall, and a lot of my problems, including the one(s)
which were the subject of this posting, have been solved. (My other problems
will be the subject of new postings.)

Thank you all for your help and input.
