Hi,

Junk in the startup group, and possible spy/ad programs will probably
account for much of it. Click start/run, type msconfig and click ok. Go to
the startup tab and look at the list of programs here. Disable those which
are not absolutely necessary (like AV software). All the third party stuff
should be disabled. It doesn't remove any of it, it just keeps it from
loading at system boot and tying up your resources.

Programs you should download, install, update, and scan the system with:

AdawareII www.lavasoft.de
Spybot www.safer-networking.org

From MVP Richard Harper on cleaning up malware infested systems:
http://rgharper.mvps.org/cleanit.htm

This one can help you avoid these programs from being installed in the first
place:
Spyware Blaster: www.javacoolsoftware.com/spywareblaster.html

How much RAM is in the PC?

My system has 1 Gig Ram. CPU is 2.6. HD has been defrag consistently. I
don't have much loaded as I still have 75% HD free space.

It seems to me that many processes are running on the background and makes
it inefficient for the ram to work as it should. I have no Viruses as well.
I use Earthlink through Cable.

Whenever the PC "Isn't acting Right" - check the Event Logs and make
sure no Errors are being logged. If so, you should resolve them.
Next on the list is Malware.... check Malke's removal page for help on
that topic:
http://elephantboycomputers.com/page2.html#Removing_Malware
58 Processes is a little high, but it all depends on the software and the
hardware in your machine. Natively, XP is going to have around 30+
processes active. Startups & Watchdogs are something of a problem,
as they are constantly active and using resources. Removing them is a
judgment call - Do you really need them. Media players tend to have
a "Me, Me - choose Me" type of attitude.

For general performance, I'd run an PCPitStop Benchmark. It can give
you comparison values for your PC against similar hardware. The score
isn't as important as whether you have any "Flagged" categories.

There's nowhere near enough information there to give you an anwer, but as a
first step in troubleshooting, I would do a thorough check for viruses and
spyware. You need to run at least two or more anti-spyware programs for good
protection.

Grin. Although I'm a "2" app. person. Yes, if I ran a third anti-spyware
I'd bet it'd find other stuff. Still, could be overkill...

I actually run

SS&D
Adaware
Spyware Blaster
Spyware Guard
Windopws Defender Beta

Hi,

If you're running WinXP Pro, click start/run, type cmd and click ok. From
the prompt, run this:

tasklist /svc

Then right click the cmd prompt header and click edit/mark. Left click and
drag the cursor over the results of running tasklist, then right click the
header bar once more and click edit/copy. Open a response to this post and
click in the message text area, hit ctrl+v on your keyboard to paste the
results and then send it for review.
