Windows Task Mgr and MS CONFIG

Guest

Greetings,
I have a six month old Dell 8300 with all the bells and whistles.
I am running Windows XP Servicepak 2

Recently I have noticed that
- if I try to run MSCONFIG nothing happens. Specifically, I go to start menu
click on run, type in MSCONFIG and absolutely nothing happens. This is
relatively new phenomenum, for 5+ months MSCONFIG has worked fine.
- if I try to get to Windows Task Mgr, it appears for literally a blink of
an eye and then disappears.
Specifically, if I right-click on the space bar, and then choose task mgr,
it appears, but literally for a blink of an eye, and then disappears
- if I go in to safe mode, I am able to both run MSCONFIG, it works fine,
and I am able to access Windows Task Mgr.

Is this a setting issue? What do I need to change?
Thank you in advance,
Herman

DD,
I spoke to soon.
I am still having trouble.
I went to the first site, and ran the temporary task manager and temporary
msconfig. the exact same thing happened, it shows up for a flash then
disappears.
I then went to the trend micro site and ran a scan - no problems.
By the way, I should mention that I have mcafee firewall and viruscan, both
of them tell me that I presently am clean.
Now what do I do?
Thanks in advance, Herman

The type of behavior you describe is typical behavior of more than
one virus/worm, the three below being the most common:

W32.Klez

W32.Yaha
http://securityresponse.symantec.com/avcenter/venc/data/[email protected]

W32.Spybot.Worm

Because many of the newer viruses and worms, such as the Spybot
mentioned above, can disable antivirus applications whose definitions
aren't kept up-to-date, try using one or more of the free on-line
scanners to double-check your system.

Start > Run: Regedit. See if the same problem occurs.
I then went to the trend micro site and ran a scan - no problems.

Well, if an Anti-Virus detects malware, you can be pretty sure that
your system is compromised (exception: false alert). However, if an
Anti-Virus doesn't find any malware, this does not necessarily mean
that your system is 'clean'. Today's viruses, worms and trojans know
how to bypass an Anti-Virus. Also, an Anti-Virus cannot detect (all)
backdoors being installed by malware. If Regedit doesn't work either,
you can bet that your system is compromised - at the latest.
Now what do I do?
