Why are some applications -- Excel, TextPad, Word, etc -- listed TWICE
in the Task Manager?

(Other applications -- Task Manager, Firefox, etc -- are listed only
ONCE)

Are these programs always listed twice?

Yes, but only in Task Manager's "Applications" window.(not in
"Processes"). Right now, the "Applications" window shows:

Microsoft Excel
Microsoft Excel
Task Manager

Did you start them twice? Highlight and do an end task.

This is typical when you have more than one file open in Office. With
NotePad or WordPad, you'd have individual windows for each instance, but
with Office apps (I don't know about TextPad), there's an entry for each
open document, even though you only have the application open "once". When
you see these duplicates, do you also see multiple buttons on the Taskbar,
one corresponding to each entry?

If that doesn't explain what you're seeing, then you should ask in an
appropriate Office NG.
