when i open task manager i notice that there is quite a long list of running
processes using a substantial amount of memory. how do i find out what these
processes are? do i need them running? and how do i remove/stop them
permenantly?

You probably need most, if not all, of them, but nobody can give you an
accurate answer without specifics.

Yes there are. Windows does a lot of things, and there are many
different processes involved in doing those things. As for memory
usage, that it what memory exists for, to be used. The point is that
just deleting and shutting off things willy-nilly without first
understanding exactly what each item does and what the consequences
are of doing away with it would be foolhardy.

The first thing to do is to use Start - Run - MSCONFIG and go to the
Startup tab. Check out the items listed there with the checklist at
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_content.php to see which, if any,
of these can be safely turned off and how best to do it.

Once you have mastered the contents of the Startup tab the next step
is to check out the various services that load at Startup. Use the
information at http://www.dead-eye.net/WinXP Services.htm to guide
you with regard to which services you can safely reconfigure. To make
the actual changes use Start - Run - SERVICES.MSC.
