Task Manager will not run

I had an unexpected shut down due to a disk error this morning and now when I
try to open task manager I get the uninformative message :-
taskmgr.exe - Ordinal Not Found
The ordinal 345 could not be located in the dynamic link library COMCTL32.dll.

Any suggestions on how to correct this problem would be welcome.

It looks like the file COMCTL32.dll may have become corrupted. I suggest you
try running a system scan. Open the Command Prompt (Start//All
programs//Acccessories) and type sfc /scannow (note the space after sfc). If
the file has been damaged, Windows can repair it. If this doesn't work, try
a System Restore. If neither work, just hope a MSVP spots your dilemma.

Ed,
Thanks for the suggestion, did you mean Accessories/Command Prompt? If so
then I get the message 'You must be an administrator running a console
session in order to use the sfc utility', which I don't understand.

Typing 'sfc /scannow' in Accessories/Run does not do anything, not even tell
me that I am doing something wrong.

Any further advice would be welcome.

Type cmd in the Start Search box above the Start Orb, when cmd.exe appears at
the top of the Start Menu, right click on cmd.exe and select "Run as
Administrator".

Neither worked!
I passed the integrity test using the "sfc /scannow" It found no
errors.I still don't get the task manager when I press Ctrl-alt-delete
under Vista ultimate 32 bit. without it life is very hard. :-(

I'll read further on. maybe there has been a fix.

Happy New Year tutti!

I use 64 bit Vista Ultimate. Ctrl+alt+delete does not run task manager. It
brings up a menu from which task manager can be run.

You may get to task manager directly by pressing Ctrl+shift+esc.

I'll try that when I go back to 64 bit in an hour or so.

Right now I'm on 32 bit as I'm trying to install trial versions of
Nero 9 and Roxio 2009. Neither seemed to work properly on my 64 bit
system. So I drop down to 32 bit to burn CD or DVD's. I can't find a
program that will work on my 64 bit Vista ultimate Hewlett Packard 3
GB 640Gb disk drive system?
